The Championship Debate Group recognizes that few activities have evolved as rapidly in the last ten years as interscholastic forensics. What many teachers may have learned in college classes or even participated in during high school or college has changed. We have found that in general quality debate teachers don’t need to be taught how to teach as much as they need a refresher in all that has changed in debate. Additionally, we recognize that a teacher institute is not the same as “just going to lectures the students will attend” but instead are classes specifically designed for professional, adult teachers and coaches. We also have recognize the need to offer basic classes for teachers who may have recently been assigned to teach debate in their school as well as more advanced classes for the coach who has a strong background in debate but wants to emphasize all that is new in the debate world. The 2016 teacher institute will offer all of that and more. Teachers may choose to emphasize Lincoln-Douglas debate or Policy debate. They can choose a basic curriculum or an advanced curriculum. And, teachers may move back and forth between seminars as they like. Teachers also will be encouraged (not required) to participate in one lesson plan writing activity of their choice which can be shared by all members of the group.
The Championship Debate Group does NOT ask our visiting teachers to do dorm duty, library duty or any other institute work. We believe this is an opportunity for you to spend a week with adult colleagues sharing ideas, learning more about debate, and getting excited about the 2016-17 speech and debate year. We have two full-time and several part time staff members committed to making this a great experience for you. Coaches on our staff have students who have won a variety of state championships and every major tournament in the country. We have career teachers who have vast experiences from very small schools to large schools. Our faculty represents teachers from urban and rural areas. What our staff shares is a love of teaching forensics and we hope that passion will make this an exciting and worthwhile activity for you.
Teachers in Texas can receive up to 40 hours of SBEC continuing education credit. Those certificates are handed out the last day. We have found in the past that receiving up to 40 hours of credit from the state sponsored organization often allows the teacher to have their way paid by their school district.
